8th grade and 10th grade reading lists

I am updating the current reading list for the required book report my 8th and 10th graders have to do during the fall semester. In my opinion, the lists they have need to be updated. I have a lot of freedom at the Ed Center, but I don't know what I can and cannot change about the course just yet. I am hoping that once I present these lists to the principal, she will not make any changes. Here are my lists (if you have suggestions for additional books, please post a comment).

8th grade reading list:

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
The Red Pony by John Steinbeck
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

10th grade reading list:

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
Eldest by Christopher Paolini
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Oh, I wish I read enough to be able to help. :( I actually read The Outsiders in 8th grade...not that it really matters. I really wish there was a book that was more current that could be put on the list. Everything on there is pretty old.

There are so many books on those lists that I should have read, but didn't. I LOVE the 8th grade list... I really don't know many of the 10th grade books.

When do they read To Kill a Mockingbird? I'm sure they do at some point.

Great lists, Em. I've been meaning to read a Wrinkle in Time myself.
